WESTDOC Highlights Highlights
500 reality and documentary producers, broadcast executives and other industry professionals flocked to the Landmark in West LA this week for WESTDOC. From Peter Hamilton’s Master Class on Sunday afternoon through Wednesday’s climactic PitchFest, WESTDOC delivered a comprehensive look at today’s documentary and reality marketplace.
In addition to 20 panels, 38 small group Sit Downs and countless one-on-one Face Time meetings, WESTDOC hosted the West Coast premiere of the controversial new documentary Unclaimed. A lively Q&A with Emmy Award-winning director Michael Jorgensen followed the screening.
Keynote presentations came from acclaimed filmmaker Ondi Timoner and Blip's CEO Kelly Day. Emmy Award-winning filmmaker Rory Kennedy discussed her wide-ranging career, and fellow Emmy winner Greg Barker detailed the making of his HBO documentary Manhunt.
Among the 45 broadcast companies which participated were: Discovery, TLC, Animal Planet, Blip, Bravo, GSN, National Geographic, CMT, SyFy, History, PBS, WE, OWN, VH1, Al Jazeera and Pivot.
The PitchFest Pitcher Award and a $7,500 cash prize (provided by sponsors Merrill Lynch Wealth Management) were awarded to director/producer Nimisha Mukerji and producer Kaitlyn Regehr for their film “Tempest Storm: Burlesque Queen,” an in-progress feature documentary that captures the tumultuous life of the legendary and controversial entertainer.
Thanks to all of our speakers, delegates and volunteers who helped make this year’s WESTDOC our most successful ever.
